Hugh Jackman, Twitter and two $50K donations

On April 14th the actor Hugh Jackman announced on Twitter:

“I will donate 100K to one individual’s favorite non profit organization.Of course,you must convince me why by using 140 characters or less.”

He got thousands of tweets (messages on Twitter) with suggestions for charities. On April 24th he wrote:

“Thank you for all of your passionate responses. I have chosen www.charitywater and www.operationofhope. Keep your generous spirit flowing!”

Hugh Jackman decided to split the $100.000. Both charity: water and Operation of Hope got $50.000 each. Brilliant! I think this act of generosity just made Hugh Jackman even better looking, sexier, a great father and husband and simply shows that he is a good guy standing on the right side of life. Thanks, Hugh! Via Twitter I got to know about 5Multiplied, a charity that is going to drill the first well in Mozambique to provide people with clean and safe drinking water. An interview with Ori Brafman, co-author of “The starfish and the spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations“. He talks about decentralized organisations and their success. According to him Barack Obama’s election campaign, YouTube and Wikipedia are good examples for this kind of “leadership”. Sounds interesting!

YouTube NonProfit raises $10.000 for charity: water – in one day

I have just read on Twitter that YouTube raised $10.000 for charity:water. In ONE day!

Charity:water joined the YouTube NonProfit programme and was featured on the YouTube homepage to commemorate World Water Day. Non-Profits can add the newly introduced “Call to Action” feature to their videos, an overlay that leads to the charity’s donations page. This way charity: water raised $10.000 in just one day. Good!

In case you are interested in the programme I wrote about Google and YouTube for Non-profits last month. As it seems this programme became even more attractive and hopefully will be expanded to help charities in other countries too.

5050box // hands project

During the last two weekends I have built another (micro-)site:
The 5050box // hands project.

It is just a fun project. On this site I want to collect 5050 hands to create a huge mosaic. As soon as 5050 pictures of hands are uploaded a limited edition of the finished mosaic will be sold. 100% of the profit will be donated to support charities.

I came up with the idea a while ago and thought it might be nice to visualize hands working together creating something big. Hand in hand. Just like I have mentioned in the video intro on 5050box that “5050box is also in your hands” it is the same with this project. I need helping hands: Your hands!

Just take a picture of your hands and upload it to http://5050box.com/hands. Thank you!

Behind the site is a tiny CMS that enables me to sort out strange pictures and create the mosaic dynamically. It is easy to handle and can be done quickly. So you can watch the mosaic grow every day!

charity: water, Twestival, iJustine and a lot of people that do care

5050box recently joined Twitter. Many others have done that too and quite a few thought it would be nice to organise 202 Twestivals, festivals around the world, “bringing together Twitter community for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water”.

“Charity: water is a non profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. They give 100% of the money raised to direct project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years.”

iJustine helped organising the Twestival in LA. She has a blog, is on Twitter and has a YouTube-Channel, of course. And: She made a video telling her users (the world) that she cares and posted it on her blog. This is her video:

In her video she asked others to created videos for charity: water too. And they did she got more than 180 video responses. Videos like these:

The organizers of the Twestivals wanted to raise at least $1.000.000 for charity: water. I hope they got $2.000.000. If you have not donated to charity: water already you can go to their site on charitywater.org or donate directly from 5050box.

If you want to submit a video for another charity just go to suggest and become a 5050box ANGEL. It is easy and feels good. ;)

Google and YouTube for Non-profits

Google and YouTube can help non-profit organisations. Google has a program called Google Grants which is part of Google for Non-profits

There is a nice ad/video that summarizes the benefits quite well. People from CASA introduce Google for Non-profits.

I think two major features of this program are

Google AdWords which is FREE for non-profits and
Google Checkout for Non-profits which means 100% of the donation go to your organisation (only in the US).

Google Checkout for Non-profits was started in late 2007 and has been extented until 2010. Members of the Google Grants program will not have to pay fees for donation processing (Google Checkout Blog for more information). There is also a video on YouTube about Google Checkout for Non-profits.

YouTube for Non-profits

If your organisation is based in the United States or the United Kingdom you can also apply for the YouTube for Non-profits programme.

According to the “YouTube for Non-profits”-site the benefits are:

Premium branding capabilities and increased uploading capacity
Listing on the Non-profit channels and the Non-profit videos pages
The option to drive fundraising through a Google Checkout “Donate” button (if your organisation is based in the US)

And of course YouTube dedicated a YouTube Channel (agentchange) to “YouTube for Non-profits”. Ramya Raghavan, Nonprofit & Activism Manager from YouTube, explains what this program is about.

Where to start

In case you might ask yourself where to start I think applying for Google Grants is the best way to kick off with your “Use Google for your charity”-strategy. Then you can start using AdWords and Google Checkout for Non-profits which should give you both more feedback and financial help. Google Grants is available in many countries already (please see the country-list below).

Currently YouTube for Non-profits is only available in the United States and the United Kingdom. But still you can set up your own YouTube Channel to inform internet users about your organisation. I think videos are a more emotional and very efficient way to reach the world in order to get help — a reason why I built 5050box.

I really would like to know what Google does for your organisation. So if you applied for a membership at Google Grants or have already been using it please drop me a line or leave a comment here. I am just curious…
